Luzerne County native takes smile mission back home where it's needed most
WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- We've all heard the expression "laughter is the best medicine". If that's the case, a northeastern Pennsylvania native believes it all starts with a smile.
He calls himself "Boh, the Smile Guy" for an online show dedicated to the power of smiles. While his initial goal was to spread joy in New York City, he soon realized his mission was needed more than ever back home.
Since 2016, Chris Bohinski -- AKA "Boh the Smile Guy" -- has been picking the brains of famous people for his YouTube program called "NYC Smile 4 Me". He got David Hyde Pierce to reveal what makes the award-winning actor smile. "Smiles of being tickled. Yeah. Thank you," which resulted in Chris tickling the 2017 Tony Award nominee who then said "He did (tickle me) and it was good for me." Chris has interviewed stars like Morgan Freeman, Bette Midler and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
"It's always exciting to hear an answer that isn't immediately maybe thought of," said Chris while discussing his smile mission on Thursday. When the 26-year-old Wilkes-Barre Township native can, he includes his biggest fan -- his mother, Barbara -- in the fun. She sang Jason Derulo's name to the popular singer while meeting him at the FOX television show "So You Think You Can Dance".
But while Chris was doing his web show and some entertainment industry work earlier this year, Barbara encountered a health crisis in March that faded her smile. "It's really crazy, you know. Why did it come back?," she said. Barbara was diagnosed with a reoccurrence of cancer she thought she beat in 2010.
Following the disturbing diagnosis, Chris decided to move back home from New York City. He said, "If there was a way to help her speed up her recovery and help her get stronger better and quicker and more efficiently then I knew that was what I was going to do." Barbara added, "He's such a big help and he's such a positive presence."
He may not have known it when launching "NYC Smile 4 Me", but "Boh the Smile Guy" was able to bring his own brand of healing to the person in his life who needed it most. "Makes me smile every day," said Barbara. When asked what makes him smile, Chris revealed his greatest source of joy. "My mom makes me smile. That's number one."
Barbara is improving and regaining her strength. As for Chris, he'd like to build on his smile mission and work in entertainment journalism... and smiling every step of the way. You can learn more about "NYC Smile 4 Me", by clicking here.
